New Capoeira CD by Dana Maman

Image Dana Maman is a capoeirista and musician originally from Tel Aviv, who now plays with Capoeira Batuque in Los Angeles. She also performs with the dance group Bale Folclorico do Brazil, and teaches percussion and capoeira music.

She has just released her first capoeira music CD, which she has made available online at her website, www.danamaman.com - check it out and support her work by making a donation!

Representation of Women in Capoeira Songs

ImageAbstract: This article analyzes the representation of women in capoeira songs, examining the ethical and instructive roles of the lyrics. Some comparisons are made between common themes in capoeira songs and in Popular Brazilian Music (MPB), establishing links between the representation of women in both musical traditions. This study also evaluates the misogynistic message of many lyrics, contrasting them with the process of transformation that has taken place in capoeira circles. The presence of prominent feminine voices, the questioning of the mistreatment of women, and the new songs are all aspects that have contributed to re-shaping the female image in the songs and in the game.

ImageMuch of capoeira’s philosophy and history is recorded between the lines of its songs, not forgetting that part of this history is linked with that of Brazil. This is why it’s important to research and question the meaning of some songs, since their main purpose is to pass on a message, whether immediately or for later reflection.
