Wondering about female mestres? Looking for some great information and thought-provoking discussion about women in capoeira? Look no further! Here are three of my favorite blogs...
Mandingueira describes itself as "a blog about women, capoeira, and women in capoeira." Its author, Joaninha, began capoeira in 2005. An excellent writer and researcher, she has created a fabulous resource with lots of active discussion in the entries' comments. Highlights include a series on female mestres, often-humorous but also useful tips and guides, and musings on feminism. Or you could simply check out the "Best Of " collection of the most interesting, most discussed, and otherwise most impactful posts.
"I came here to play!" was the theme of the 2008 FICA International Women's Conference. Check out the blog for profiles of the female mestres and instructors who attended the event, summaries of the discussion topics, letters and thoughts from participants, and tons of great pictures. Don't miss it next year!
Gringa is "the story of how capoeira, the African-Brazilian martial art/dance, became part of life for a British woman who now lives in Brazil." Author Sabrina Gledhill mixes videos, thoughts on race and gender, and profiles in with stories of her own experiences learning and living capoeira in Salvador, Bahia, the cradle of the art. |
