Image What at the dawn of the 20th century was a practice largely confined to former slaves in Brazil has now, at the opening of the 21st century, become a practice taken up by people of every ethnic background from all walks of life, in over 130 countries. This article provides an overview of capoeira outside Brazil and a discussion of some of the cultural complexities resulting from the spread of the art beyond national borders.
